How do we get usable business data out of old or custom software without breaking what still works?
Prove ownership, lawful access, recoverability and the shape of the data before promising a migration. The safest first result is usually a reversible extraction test and a decision about export, integration, staged migration or leaving the system alone.
Old software can hold records, files, reports, history, configuration and business rules that are not obvious from the screen. The first job is to identify what the business actually needs and what must keep running while it is investigated.
Cybermonkey can map the access and options, test an authorised sample and document the safest path. We do not promise universal export, recovery without lawful access, or a full migration before the system and evidence are understood.
What is actually trapped?
List the records, files, reports, history, configuration and business rules the team needs. Separate useful business data from application internals that may not need to move.
Who owns it, and what access is allowed?
Confirm data ownership, software licensing, vendor terms, credentials held by authorised people and any IP constraints before reading or copying anything.
Can the current system be recovered?
Prove that backups exist and can be restored before testing an old database, export tool, integration or code path. A copy is not a backup until recovery has been checked.
Which path is safest?
Compare a native export, read-only extraction, API integration, staged migration and no change. The right answer depends on continuity, data quality, support and what decision the data must enable.
What proves the data still means the same thing?
Use agreed test cases for completeness, dates, identifiers, relationships and reconciliation. Missing, duplicated or transformed records must be visible rather than silently accepted.
What must keep working?
Name the operational process that cannot stop, its fallback and the exact rollback point before touching a live dependency.
Put the question against the real work.
